However, the predominant content of the cognitions seen in anxiety disorders relates to threat rather than to loss (Beck and Clark, 1988). Specifically, cognitive behavioural theories of anxiety state that sufĂerers tend to overestimate the threat of given situations and they tend to underestimate their own ability to cope with those situations (Beck and Clark, 1988). The feared 'situation' may be limited to a discrete 'threat' such as for simple phobias, or may be much more generalised such as with panic disorder (PD) and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).
