| Description | In this research the effect of impact on the residual compressive strength of composite plates is studied. In the first step, using analytical methods, the impact force and the time of impact for a falling weight on a composite plate are calculated. Using finite element techniques, the stress fields due to impact under equivalent static and transient impact loading conditions are calculated. Using the three dimensional Tsai-Wu failure criterion, the damaged area due to impact load is simulated. By changing the material properties of the elements in the damaged area and applying the compressive load on the composite plate, the residual compressive strength is modeled. By performing a series of experiments on the Glass/Epoxy composite plates under impact loading the damaged areas simulated by the model are evaluated. Afterward, by applying a compressive load on the damaged composite plates the residual compressive strength of the plates are measured. The results obtained from experiments are compared with that of the model. A relative good agreement is obtained between the experimental results and the results from the modeling. The method presented in this study can be used as a reliable method in modeling of residual compressive strength of composite plates under impact loading.
