Much effort has been directed at using these biologically important chemicals not only in survey programs to detect and monitor insect populations but also in attempts to suppress mating of a wide variety of insects. In almost all cases, these field uses of the pheromones require chemicals that are formulated in such a way that they remain biologically active over a prolonged period. Without this formulation, activity generally drops rapidly because the materials volatilize or degrade.
