| Description | Surfactants represent one of the most important additives in paints and lacquers, and the coatings area is an excellent example of the importance of surface and colloid chemistry. Paints – in particular, waterborne paints – are very complex products from a physicochemical point of view. Not only normal low molecular weight surfactants are used in paint formulations. The chapter discusses the role of surfactants in the wet paint and some of the effects of surfactants on the properties of the dry paint film. The word surfactant is used in a broad sense, including both low molecular weight and polymeric amphiphiles. Surfactants capable of participating in autoxidative drying are of interest for the post-emulsification of alkyd resins. Ethoxylated monoethanolamides of unsaturated fatty acids are one such type of surfactant that can be chemically incorporated into the network during drying of an alkyd based coating film.
