| Description | A design methodology is presented that permits the formal application of variable in situ stress conditions in rock engineering designs within the context of risk based design procedures. The variability of the stress state in South African mining regions is considered using a database of 400 measurements. Examples of the design of tunnel support in mines and the determination of the potential for seismic events in tabular gold mine stopes are given to illustrate the technique. Consideration still needs to be given to selection of the appropriate confidence levels and to determine what level of risk is acceptable. The basis of a design methodology is presented that permits the formal application of variable in situ stress conditions in rock engineering designs within the context of risk based design procedures. Since it is practically impossible to model the entire geological history, a design methodology is required that can quantitatively account for any variation that can be measured using a limited number of stress measurements. In the current project, the measurements were selected based on the major mining regions each with a distinct geological history. The variation in the major k-ratio is small for the gold mining areas, but a wide range of k-values have been measured in the Bushveld Complex. The essentials of the point estimate methodology are given details can be found in the book by Harr. Book Name: Rock Stress |
