Description	This chapter briefly explains the context in which the rural development programs of the Government of India operate in rural areas, the areas they focus on, and the role information and communications technology (ICT) has played in improving the effectiveness, outreach, efficiency, transparency, and accountability in the implementation of these programs. The chapter elucidates the evolution of ICT in rural development and highlights how the departments with a focus on rural development, such as the Department of Rural Development, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj have transitioned from pioneering the introduction of ICT systems at the district level in 1986, taking it further to the block and panchayat levels. The emerging global trends in the evolution of rural development programs with the focus on poverty alleviation, employment generation, housing, skilling, livelihood, connectivity, land development, rural water supply, and sanitation have also been indicated, and the potential role that emerging technologies can play in further improving the implementation of these programs is also outlined to guide the way forward. The journey of the ICT systems underpinning Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee, Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana—Gramin, Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana—National Rural Livelihood Mission, Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, ServicePlus, and Swachh Bharat Mission—Gramin, among others, are also been covered to demonstrate the role that technology has played in the effective implementation of these programs. The National Informatics Centre has played a pivotal role in the digital transformation of all these flagship programs, as this chapter highlights.
