| Description | This chapter explores the intersection of aging and unhealthy substance use, including current trends suggesting an increase in prevalence of substance misuse and treatment need among older adults. Applying a life course framework, differential effects of alcohol and other drug use specific to older adults are discussed along with information concerning risks specific to this population. The typical substances used by older adults are identified along with recognition of cohort differences in types of substances used and levels of severity of misuse. Major treatment approaches and modalities are reviewed, including psychosocial treatments, pharmacological treatments, and mutual aid groups. Evidence regarding each of these treatment approaches is discussed with an emphasis on their effectiveness with older adults. In addition, the chapter provides guidance for general approaches for working with older adults seeking help for alcohol or other drug problems.
