| Description | The naturalistic project, as the people have seen, is vitiated by the dogmatic metaphysics implicit in its premises and gives a distorted account of the 'truth-relevant' content. To begin with, to have the concept of truth, whatever else it might involve, must involve having the notion of 'telling the truth', and the latter notion, in turn, is inseparable from the idea of certainty in respect of the verifying evidence. In short, the possession of the concept of truth, in as much as it involves the notion of telling the truth, also necessarily involves the idea of certainty in respect of the verifying evidence. The concept of truth-relevant content evidently must be taken in a broader sense than is allowed by, or is even compatible with, a naturalistic approach; in particular, it must be broad enough to incorporate indexical features of truth claims.
