| Description | Two new calanticine scalpellids, Smilium chathecum and Calantica (?Scillaelepas) pittensis are described from the Chatham Islands. They are significant in that they represent relatively early forms of their respective genera, and demonstrate some degree of morphological overlap between extant and ancestral taxa. The paleoenvironment of S. chathecum is discussed, and a review of the status of Calantica (Scillaelepas) and the Calanticinae is included. |
