| Description | Maneuverability of a ship in regular waves is numerically investigated in this paper. A unified seakeeping and maneuvering numerical model is used for assessing the ship behavior in waves. A crude oil carrier (KVLCC2) model is used for studying the ship's maneuvering behavior. The wave exciting forces are calculated based on strip theory. The Froude-Krylov and the restoring forces are calculated for the exact wetted surface area and the diffraction forces are calculated for mean wetted surface area. The hydrodynamic derivatives and the control surface, i.e., the propeller and the rudder, are modelled based on empirical data available in the existing literature. The equation of motion is solved in the body frame. An autopilot is designed based on PID controller and tested for the model operating in waves. Effectiveness of the PID controller in regular waves is numerically investigated by navigating the ship in the desired trajectory through way point guidance, using a line of sight (LOS) guidance algorithm.
