| Description | The chemical reactions involving either the usage or generation of electrical current (i.e., flow of electrons in different media) lead to the foundation of a special branch of chemistry, widely known as “electrochemistry.” Unlike homogeneous reactions, electrochemical reactions are heterogeneous in nature, as they occur primarily on a surface. The possibility of spontaneous or even non-spontaneous reactions to occur on surfaces of interest, at desired rates and to desired extents, leads to a wide spectrum of technologically important applications, ranging from structural, functional, biomedical, to energy generation and storage. In this context, after a brief discussion on some of the basic concepts in chemical thermodynamics, this chapter will introduce the basic principles governing electrochemistry, connect the same with the associated concepts in thermodynamics, and also describe some of the techniques related to electrochemical measurements/analysis.
