| Description | Power storage devices, typified by lithium-ion secondary batteries, are high-efficiency devices for electrochemical energy conversion. The use of batteries in automobiles and smart grids is currently widespread, and it is hoped that the adoption of power storage devices in these contexts will play a large part in resolving environmental and energy issues in the future [1]. To improve the performance of these devices and achieve high-performance storage batteries, it is required to understand the successive hierarchical reactions that occur within these devices, over a wide spatial and temporal range. The reactions that occur inside lithium-ion secondary batteries involve multiple inter-related phenomena with nonequilibrium 70condition. Therefore, we cannot at present accurately grasp the factors governing reaction kinetics or the mechanism of degradation by using the destructive analyses that have conventionally been employed in storage battery research.
