| Description | This chapter focuses on gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, ozone and water vapour act as insulators, trapping heat in our atmosphere and keeping the planet to the temperature to which are accustomed. It is the greenhouse effect and thus the collective term for the gases performing the role is 'greenhouse gases'. Greenhouse gases are now reaching artificially high levels because of the burning of fossil fuels needed to power all the stuff we are building and producing. Methane produced due to the decomposition of our biodegradable waste, such as food and sewage, is another contributor to GHGs in our atmosphere. It is consequently producing the famous effects of global warming and climate change. Methane is an effective GHG, which is produced, in basic terms, when things rot. It's emitted from both natural and human sources. A carbon credit represents the removal of one tone of carbon dioxide, or its greenhouse gas equivalent, from the environment.
