| Description | Being non-biodegradable, disposal of petroleum-derived plastic materials has become a significant concern; thus, biodegradability is a chief aim for the exploration of new polymers that can be removed from the environment in an eco-friendly manner. The progress of environmentally friendly methods in material synthesis is of substantial significance for increasing their biological relevance. Recently, biodegradable polymers have emerged as a possible alternative material to traditional plastic materials. Biodegradable polymers are likely to show an essential role in the maintenance of a clean environment by replacing extensively used non-biodegradable synthetic plastics. Recently, researchers have shown that some of these biodegradable biopolymers are highly biocompatible and can be used for several applications. Based on this, industrial-scale production of these biodegradable polymers is essential to ensure alternative sources of plastic. Biopolymers produced from microbial sources include polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and polylactic acid (PLA), which are natural polymers and readily biodegradable. The degradation of these natural polymers includes the enzymatic scission of the polymer chain into their subunits. In this chapter, microbial biopolymers (dextran, xanthan, bacterial alginate, bacterial cellulose, cyanophycin, microbial hyaluronic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and their composites), their production roots, and their possible applications in numerous fields are discussed in detail.
