| Description | There is a substantial difference between the morphology of a living larva and its subfossil remains. Subfossil larvae preserved in sediments are typically without a body; only the chitinized head capsule remains, which is incomplete (for comparison of a head of living and subfossil larva, see Figure 3.1). Delicate, but for identification, essential features, such as labral setae SI and SII, labral lamellae and pecten epipharyngis, are practically always missing; more robust structures, such as premandible and antenna, are also rarely present. What is usually left is the mentum and mandibles, that is, these are the features we have to rely upon for identification. Often these structures are not associated with the head capsule either. The degree of disarticulation of the remains depends on many taphonomic factors (e.g., hydromorphology of the lake, chemical processes and type of sediment), but also on the features of the subfamily where the remains belong. Head capsules of Orthocladiinae and some Chironomini tend to split in half while heads of Tanytarsini and Tanypodinae are basically 26always entire; subfossil remains of the latter are often torn and miss most of the structures within the head capsule (Brooks et al. 2007).
