| Description | Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase may be regarded as the starting point for two major metabolic pathways in green plant tissues. Photosynthetic $CO_{2}$ assimilation in a certain sense begins with the carboxylation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate, catalyzed by this protein, to form two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate. The role of the photochemical and bioenergetic metabolism phases of photosynthesis may be envisioned as converting the resultant 3-phosphoglycerate into higher energy sugar phosphates for use by other metabolic pathways (triose phosphates), and as providing the thermodynamic driving force for the carboxylation reaction (by regenerating ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate). The photorespiratory pathway also begins at a reaction catalyzed by this protein, the oxygenation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate to yield one molecule of 3-phosphoglycerate and one molecule of 2-phosphoglycolate. After dephosphorylation of 2-phosphoglycolate, the glycolic acid leaves the chloroplast and is metabolized with loss of $CO_{2}$ via enzymes located in various cellular compartments.
