| Description | Different energy transition scenarios are examined: seven organizations have studied the desirable changes in energy production and consumption in France. No scenario claims that fossil and nuclear energy can be replaced by renewables without a drastic reduction in consumption. As concerns electricity alone, 100% renewable production in France is only possible under unrealistic conditions. Shutting down some of France's nuclear reactors to replace them with wind and solar power would increase the risk of power cuts and would require major consumption rescheduling. At the global level, 100% renewable production is even less realistic. The IPCC scenarios are based largely on renewable energies, nuclear power, underground carbon storage and reductions in consumption. A strong development of nuclear power is probably unrealistic, but this energy can contribute to the fight against global warming. Book Name: Energy Transition |
