| Description | This article assesses the validity of Michael Porter's framework in explaining Japanese industrial development. It asks a number of essential questions. First, to what extent do the facts dealt with in his work illustrate the main processes of Japanese industrial development? Second, does Japanese advantage rest on the truly systemic management of a 'value chain' which incorporates suppliers, producers, distributors and supportive sectors? Third, to what degree can product differentiation be a major source of competitive advantage for Japanese firms? On the first question Porter uses a data-set which leads him to exaggerate the competitive advantages of Japanese industry. On the second, we can find a value chain system in every field of the Japanese economy, but it only worked effectively in particular industries such as processing and fabrication, and the relationship to success in world export markets is far from axiomatic. Regarding the third, critical examples of product differentiation can be discovered in Porter's data-set for many Japanese industries, especially in consumer end-products, but it did not necessarily create Japan's national competitive advantage.
