| Description | The Gunasundari Katha, a Telugu film which was a huge commercial success in its time, begins with Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati in their celestial abode as strains of a song waft up to heaven–it is a prayer, asking for divine intervention at a moment of crisis. The film then unfolds in flashback as Shiva recounts the story of King Ugrasena of Dharanagaram, an egoistic king with three daughters. Few noticed the connection with Shakespeare's King Lear, but to fully appreciate its popularity the film needs to be read not only as an adaptation of Shakespeare but also in the context of Telugu cinema. Telugu cinema developed a genre of folklore films which can be regarded as localised mythologicals. The costumes of mythological characters, gods and goddesses in plays performed before cinema arrived in South India reveal the influence of the painter Ravi Varma.
