| Description | The variation of wireless channels was regarded as an obstacle to wireless communication until the occasional long-haul data transmissions are effectively utilized. The same broadcast transmission may be perceived significantly differently, and usually independently, by multiple receivers at different geographic locations. The link-quality variation as well as the broadcasting nature of wireless channels have revealed a direction in the research of wireless networking, namely, opportunistic data communication. Research on opportunistic data communication was first explored on the physical layer and has been investigated for several years on the link and network layers. In this chapter, we present the Cooperative Opportunistic Routing in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (CORMAN) with proactive source routing (PSR). It is a pure network layer protocol that can be built atop off-the-shelf wireless networking equipment. It first uses our lightweight proactive source routing protocol to determine a list of intermediate nodes that the data packets should follow to reach the destination. During the data transmission, a data packet at an upstream node is not sent to a predetermined downstream node serving as a forwarder but broadcast and forwarded by the furthest downstream node that opportunistically received it along the route. The opportunistic data transmission continues until the packet reaches the destination. Our work extends the Extremely Opportunistic Routing to mobile scenarios. We test our proposed scheme and compare it to existing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks. It is found that the proposed scheme can effectively reduce the networking overhead while improving the network performance significantly. Book Name: Opportunistic Networks |
