| Description | The paper presents the new technology of the seismic assessment, evaluation, retrofitting, strengthening and the practices in the capital area of Beijing for the land-mark public buildings, such as The Beijing Railway Station, The Historic Museum of China, The Beijing Hotel, The Agriculture Exhibition Hall of China, The Beijing Exhibition Hall and The Beijing Library which were designed and constructed in 1950's or even earlier without earthquake resistance measures. These buildings are still being used over and above their service-life. Same problems remain in schools and hospitals, which hold crowds and function a key role for the emergency rescue work of post-earthquakes. The Chinese government allocated since 1997 special funds for the overall and comprehensive assessment, evaluation, retrofit and strengthening on public buildings in Beijing University, Beijing Aero-space University, Beijing Pedagogical University, University of Chemical Industry, as well as the hospitals affiliated to China Academy of Medical Science, University of Medical Science of Beijing, etc. Some recently developed technology and instruments have been employed to ensure capacity of earthquake resistance to the buildings. For example, the supersonic wave surveying, the electronic scanning, core-sampling approaches for the quality investigation of R.C. components; the seismic assessment and the strengthening design according to the national standards; the small pile named as 'tree-root pile', the R.C. attached wall named as 'sandwich wall', the steel jacket and band, the R.C. shear wall, the vacuum-high pressure grouting, and the energy dissipation damper, etc. have been used for the retrofitting and strengthening of the existing buildings not only in the capital area of Beijing but also nationwide.
