| Description | The polarization transformation properties of gratings have many potential applications in optical design. In principle, a full range of functions such as polarization beam splitters, retarders and rotators can be realized (Fig. 12.1 ). In addition, the grating surface can modify the isotropic nature of most dielectric materials producing an artificial birefringent layer. With the advent of highresolution microlithography and holographic techniques it should be possible to integrate many of these functions using the planar optic format described previously in Chapter 7.
