Description	Estuarine and coastal marine waters of England are affected by the same suite of organic and inorganic chemical pollutants that plague many U.S. coastal systems. Wastewater discharges, sewage sludge dumping, dredged-spoil disposal, and other sources of contaminants have been responsible for substantial concentrations of nutrients, halogenated hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and radioactive substances in coastal waters. In systems subjected to long-term sewage sludge disposal (e.g., Garroch Head, Firth of Clyde, Scotland), enrichment of nutrients and organic carbon loading have significantly impacted biotic communities. The most acute effects are manifested among the benthos. Other systems strongly affected by contaminant inputs from chemical industry wastes and sewage discharges (e.g., Tees estuary) have also exhibited degraded water quality and impacted biotic communities. Heavily industrialized estuaries, such as the Tees estuary, are influenced by a wide range of chemical contaminants. Here, once thriving fisheries and bottom-dwelling communities have been degraded. The following discussion provides a detailed description of pollution impacts on biotic communities at Garroch Head in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, and the Tees River estuary in northeast England.
