| Description | Polyalkylene glycols (PAG) were one of the first synthetic lubricant base fluids to be developed and commercialized. They have been known for 70 years and during this time have found use in many niche applications where traditional lubricants based on petroleum oils are not effective. The aim of this chapter is to share knowledge of many of the known technical aspects of PAGs. Even after many decades of use, new applications for PAGs continue to be discovered. This chapter will focus on PAGs derived from ethylene oxide and/or 1,2-propylene oxide. Chapter 7 will discuss a new class of PAGs called oil soluble PAGs derived from 1,2-butylene oxide. As I hope you will see, the possibilities for designing new polymers are truly endless. Researchers with creative minds and non-traditional thinkers will continue to develop new polymer architectures and solve tribology problems that will challenge our industry in the future.
