| Description | Constructed wetlands are effective, ecologically sound, and aesthetically pleasing wastewater treatment systems that require low maintenance. Wetlands decrease acidity, metals, pathogens, trace organics, and, to a lesser extent, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in wastewater, mine drainage, and other waters. Although design criteria for sizing the components of an effective wetland are affected by the types and levels of pollutants present, many of the components of a successful wetland treatment system are the same. Black & Veatch has provided conceptual, design, and construction administration for several mine drainage, storm, and municipal wastewater wetland treatment systems. Black & Veatch design considerations for two of these natural wastewater treatment systems currently operating are discussed. These two sites were selected for comparison due to their preconstruction similarity of acidic water with high metal contents. Book Name: Constructed Wetlands for Water Quality Improvement |
