| Description | Continuing the project management journey, this chapter discusses the next phase of project life cycle – Initiation. The primary purpose of the Initiation Phase is to determine the optimal approach to execute the project and to ensure the continual support of the organization, after conducting a more thorough evaluation on the implementation feasibility of the project. The attention of the organization shifts from that of business and organizational planning to execution. Often, project professionals and selective core team members, who are often the subject matter experts, are first engaged here. With their combined intelligence evaluating the approved ideas, organizations gain greater confidence in the viability of the project. On the flip side, if the project implementation is more difficult or cost or time-consuming that was approved in the business case, organizations can use this opportunity to reconsider moving forward with the project. During this phase, project professionals utilize a wide range of assessment and evaluation tools, such as stakeholder identification and assessment, risk identification and evaluation, initial requirement analysis, and estimation of scope, resources, and cost. For selective projects, there can be further analysis on organizational readiness and adoption, evaluation of conflicts including politics, and impact on operations. The cumulation of this work is a project charter, a contract between the sponsor, representing the customers and executives, and the project manager, representing the project team. 58This chapter addresses these fundamental questions: What are the key questions to tackle during project initiation? What is the problem of fuzzy front end? How to get started? How to manage the fuzzy front end? What is a project charter and why is it important? Book Name: Optimizing Project Management |
