| Description | Around an excavation there is a continuous change of the stress state (absolute values and orientation of principal stresses). This stress change induces new micro- and macro-fractures and affects the properties and behaviour of the rock. The aim of the paper is to study these phenomena for two simple loading or unloading schemes: the more conventional mode, whereby the test starts from an unloaded sample and the load is increased, until failure occurs, and the rather opposite way, whereby the samples are loaded isotropically to a pre-determined value, followed by a decrease of 1 or 2 of the principal stress components. Laboratory experiments, as well as numerical simulations were conducted. At macro-scale no significant difference was noted between both loading schemes. However, the numerical simulations showed more tensile micro-cracks in the unloading scheme. Book Name: Rock Stress |
