| Description | The explicit numerical method for modeling the simultaneous flow of two immiscible fluids, recently developed for FLAC may also be used to solve problems of unsaturated flow (i.e. relying on the assumption of constant air pressure) for which capillary effects are important. The method uses analytic laws of the van Genuchten form to express capillary pressure and relative permeabilities in terms of saturation. The algorithm, based on upstream weighting techniques, allows modeling of full and partial saturation in the wetting fluid. The paper describes the method and illustrates its applicability with numerical solutions to four fluid flow problems, with and without mechanical interaction.
