| Description | Book Name: Towards Rational Education |
| Abstract | Chapter 1 sets the grounds of rational education values considered necessary for the establishment of rational education as a social action and vision, not only as individual development. The author initially presents his tripartite vision of education including moving from educational systems to education, enriching forms of current education and moving from education to cultural cultivation. Later on, he encapsulates another, fourth vision, moving from libertarian to rational education by setting problems of contemporary libertarian education and stressing the need for more (or mainly) rational education. The author combines scientific, philosophical and political arguments to show the problems of contemporary libertarian education and why, despite its good elements and motives, it fails (or delays) to offer holistic, socially-relevant, rational education to all people. He mainly exerts critique on the hierarchical structures of contemporary education citing numerous factors (e.g., administrative, programmatic, social and psychological) that hinder today’s education from becoming more rational. The author acknowledges the progress that has been made passing through from authoritarian to libertarian education (serving individual flourishing) but he justifies why rational education still remains the missing link from today’s education and/or remains an educational purpose by itself for further social change. He then promotes a fundamental proposition introducing rational education as moral framework of education including three fundamental purposes (character building, rational thinking and knowledge of facts) with an emphasis on human change at the societal, not only individual, level. He, finally, highlights several concepts, characteristics and mechanisms of rational education (e.g., rational education as an emancipatory form of education) leading up the soil to the next chapter which presents a framework of eight fundamental values to be cultivated through rational education to promote social change. |
