| Description | The soil displacements and stresses mobilised with retaining wall movement is significant for exploring better and more economic design methods in excavations. This paper describes a pair of centrifuge tests carried out to explore the relationship between sand displacements and retaining wall movement, modelling two types of wall rotation in loose sand. A new actuator system is designed to rotate the rigid retaining wall in the tests and soil displacements are observed and calculated through Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Sand displacements and strains in active and passive rotation are presented and comparison between the sand deformation in two types of wall rotation is discussed. The soil displacements and stresses mobilised with retaining wall movement is significant for exploring better and more economic design methods in excavations. This chapter describes a pair of centrifuge tests carried out to explore the relationship between sand displacements and retaining wall movement, modelling two types of wall rotation in loose sand. Sand displacements and strains in active and passive rotation are presented and comparison between the sand deformation in two types of wall rotation is discussed. The chapter presents a pair of centrifuge tests simulating the rigid retaining wall rotation about the wall top and bottom points in loose sand, and analyses sand deformation in two tests. It concludes that more fundamental questions should be explored by more advanced methods to establish a better understanding of the deformation mechanism in excavations.
