| Description | An athlete with an impairment provides challenges for the sports nutrition professional, in relation to daily training environment or travelling for competition, that are additional to those experienced by an able-bodied athlete. As well as general principles of sports nutrition, there will be practical issues that this athlete faces due to their impairment which will need to be considered and addressed. This chapter aims to offer solutions to these issues, whether they occur in the athlete's home environment or on the road. It provides guidance on what issues may confront specific impairment groups – spinal cord injuries (SCI), cerebral palsy and acquired brain injury, amputees, vision impairment and intellectual impairment – and suggests ways in which the sports nutritionist can tackle these issues, as well as issues that confront all impairment types. The sports nutrition professional should strive to have a good understanding of the specific impairment category of their athlete in order to understand the athlete's physiological needs and their lifestyle practicalities; be mindful of the athlete's living environment and ensure it is replicated as much as possible when travelling; and listen to their athlete, who is their greatest resource and learning opportunity.
