| Description | The aim of physics and natural philosophy is to provide us with some comprehension of the whole, real, existing world, including our experiences with it-from the microscopic domain of elementary particle physics (where presentday distances probed are the order of 10−14 cm and less) to the astronomical domain of galaxies and clusters of galaxies, and beyond, to the domain of the universe as a whole-the domain of cosmology (where present-day observations entail distances of the order of 1028 cm and greater —about 42 orders of magnitude greater than the domain of investigation of the elementary particle physicist!) The earliest investigations of our surroundings in terms of explicit laws of nature came from our observations of the night sky. Perhaps this is because it seemed then, in pre-historic times, to be the most awe-inspiring, and even threatening. Perhaps it did not occur to humankind in those ancient times that there is something to understand about ourselves and our immediate surroundings, and about our place in the universe.
