| Description | This paper traces the history of seismic response analysis of level and sloping ground and embankment dams from 1960 to 1993 and evaluates the current state of the art. The main emphasis is on estimating permanent seismic deformations and designing to satisfy deformation criteria. The necessary technology is now available. The U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) has experience using the dynamic effective stress analysis methods of Finn and they are used extensively in this paper to illustrate the major role that seismic deformation analyses can contribute to safety evaluations and design of remediations. The most difficult problems are posed by structures which contain potentially liquefiable soils in the embankments and/or the foundation. Problem areas are: the reliable determination of the residual strength of liquefied soils for post-liquefaction stability analyses, the assessment of post-liquefaction deformations, the criteria used for planning cost effective remediation and the evaluation of remedial measures given seismically induced liquefaction occurs. Suggestions for dealing with these problems are proposed based on critical assessment of practice and research findings. Book Name: Developments in Geotechnical Engineering |
