| Description | Traditionally amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been considered to spare cognition and behavior. A growing body of research now challenges this assumption, with evidence that a strong link exists between ALS and frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD). FTLD produces changes in behavior, executive function and language, while sparing memory. Patients with FTLD are at risk for developing ALS, and, conversely, a sizable percentage of patients with ALS exhibit co-morbid FTLD. In familial cases family members may manifest FTLD, ALS, or both.
