| Description | This paper aims to investigate vibration characteristics at concrete pavement joints. A vibration-sensing system based on Distributed Optical Vibration Sensing (DOVS) technology was established embedded into the concrete slabs. First, a full-scale test was conducted to investigate the vibrations of concrete pavement in different joints. A falling weight deflectometer (FWD) was employed in the full-scale test to apply impulse loads on those joints, with three different loading magnitudes and the corresponding vibrations of the loaded and unloaded concrete slab were captured by the DOVS-based system. Then, to analyze original signals from the vibration-sensing system, a signal processing method was proposed to extract features of vibration in the time and frequency domain. The results of the full-scale test suggest that frequency spectrum on the side of a loaded slab is stronger than it on the other side of an unloaded slab. The differences between LTE and the ratio of amplitude (ROA) vary significantly in frequency-domain and are influenced by the magnitudes of impulse load and the kinds of joint. However, the differences reach an extremum (< 0.005) in 200~225 Hz. Overall, these findings indicate the pavement vibration has the potential to assess the situation of joints, but the practicality under moving load requires further demonstration.
