Transport has a significant role not only in the development of economy but also in the day to day life of a common person. Not only developing but also developed countries are facing the problems caused by transport related activities like congestion, accidents, air and noise pollution. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are seen as a crucial component in traffic management. Extensive research has been carried out by various researchers in area of traffic flow. This paper reviews various short term as well as long term methods for road traffic prediction in India. Traffic approaches were subdivided in two categories: Mathematical/Statistical and artificial intelligence based approach.
