| Description | Because of the independent origins of evolutionary ecology and many areas of applied biology, they initially evolved in isolation from each other, with each developing its own terminology, research approaches, societies, and publications. Such fields as economic entomology, plant pathology, parasitology, microbiology, and even medicine have a wealth of information that could aid in theory development in evolutionary ecology; but for a long time this has largely been ignored by evolutionary ecologists. Recently, however, there has been an increase in cross-pollination among fields. For example, coevolutionary biologists initially learned about gene-gene interactions by examining older studies by plant pathologists (Flor, 1956), and evolutionary concepts are finally being applied to the study of medicine (Ewald, 1994). |
