| Description | The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is one of a number of measures of correlation. Measures of correlation are not inferential statistical tests, but are, instead, descriptive statistical measures which represent the degree of relationship between two or more variables. Within the framework of computing a correlation coefficient additional analyses are conducted which are described by the general term regression analysis. Upon computing the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient, it is common practice to determine whether the obtained absolute value of the correlation coefficient is large enough to allow a researcher to conclude that the underlying population correlation coefficient between the two variables is some value other than zero. The accurate way to determine the regression line is to compute, through use of a procedure referred to as the method of least squares. A correlation coefficient which is based on averages, proportions, or percentages for groups is referred to as an ecological correlation.
