| Description | The aim of this contribution is to evaluate the significance and the impact of the American grand strategic presence in the Greek-Turkish subregional system. It attempts to re-evaluate the course of relations between Washington, Athens and Ankara in the context of the post-September 11, 2001, and post-Second Gulf War international system. Recognizing the complexity of the relationships, the analytical focus highlights the variety of relevant actors and discusses their relative power and influence. This contribution emphasizes the security sphere within the context of four interlocking environments: the evolution of US foreign policy priorities and preferences, especially after the September 11 terrorist attacks; the individual bilateral arenas and their interlocking nature; the dynamic domestic political arenas, which are shaped by an aggregation of internal and external influences, the most important of which is the European Union (EU); and the wider global environment insofar as it impinges on the triangular relationship.
