| Description | Assessing collision is important to realize ship traffic safety. The primary collision assessment methods are based on the indexes of the number of geometric collision candidates and the collision causation probability. Its conventional methods are suitable for simple traffic such as in narrow straits and traffic separation routes, however the applicability to traffic in large congested sea areas is not validated. In this paper, the authors analyzed the relationships between these indexes and the other collision assessment result for the validation in a large congested sea area. The number of geometric collision candidates was calculated by a mesh-based method that we had developed, which can be applied to complicated traffic situations. Then, the correlation between the calculated value and collision location was analyzed. Also, the calculated value was compared to the result by the conventional collision causation probability estimated based on narrow straits. According to these analyses, we validated the applicability to large congested sea areas for assessing collisions.
