| Description | This book is concerned with a rather narrow anthropological problem. It can be summed up as the problem of the Keresan Bridge (see Map I). Eggan divided the Pueblos into two types, the 'Western', characterized by a kinship structure 'based on the matrilineal lineage and household', and the 'Eastern', which lacked this as a 'basic' feature. The linguistic group known as the Keresans straddles the two types, having two Pueblos in the west and five in the east. The Eastern Keresans have a matrilineal kinship system, but it is not as dominant in their total social system as it is in the west. Eggan offers an interpretation of this situation - 'strong' matrilineal organization in the West and 'weak' or nonexistent in the East - in historical and adaptational terms. The test of this theory lies essentially in a proper understanding of the Eastern Keresan kinship system and its place in their social structure. The question what is a proper understanding of a kinship system, and how to discover the 'true' workings of such a system is anything but a parochial one. I hope that this discussion of a purely ethnological problem may also make some contribution in this wider theoretical field. Book Name: The Keresan Bridge |
