| Description | In recent times, vast amounts of the energy arising from crude oil is still left in the pore spaces of rocks after regular enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods. Only one-third to one-half of the oil is recovered from the original oil in place (OOIP). This reason has led the researchers to develop a method which is cost-effective and environmentally safe which can help to recover the left oil efficiently. Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is a biological-based technology to improve the recovery of oil entrapped in porous media with increasing economic profits. Several decades of research and successful applications claim MEOR as a mature technology. MEOR is a method in which microorganisms are activated using specially prepared nutrients, which helps them to produce metabolic products such as biopolymers, biosurfactants (BSs) , etc. BSs will help in emulsification and de-emulsification through reduction of interfacial tension (IFT), and biopolymers will aid in injectivity profile and viscosity modification and selective plugging. The selection of nutrients is a very crucial factor for 186the success of MEOR. Microorganisms are introduced with a food source so that the desired bioproducts get produced, and the survival of bacteria is completely dependent on what nutrients are fed to them. The best way to select nutrients is done after a detailed study of the subsurface properties like pH, salinity and trace minerals. The selection of a microbe species is also another crucial factor in MEOR. They should adapt to the reservoir conditions and produce the desired bioproducts. Different species of bacteria have different adaptabilities, so the best way to get the most suitable bacterial strain is after careful laboratory studies and test on core samples. MEOR technology can help in 20%-30% more additional oil recovery during the abandonment of an oilfield. Book Name: Advances in Petroleum Technology |
