| Description | Identity and competency are central tenets of a doctor's practice and key hallmarks of the medical profession. In this chapter, we explore evidence from the literature and undertake qualitative research to identify the stories and perspectives of a range of doctors, the multi-professional team and their patients. We draw on the works of the French philosophers Michel Foucault and Bruno Latour to trace the impacts of knowledge/power on changing doctor identities and perceptions of competence, and the impact of non-human as well as human agency on changes to past, present and future conceptions of doctor identity and competence. We focus specifically on the impact of the 21st-century medical education development, which recognises the importance of professional qualities, non-technical roles as well as clinical expertise on doctor identity and conceptions of competence. We do, however, see further disruption and opportunities on the horizon with technology enhancement rendered through machine learning and artificial intelligence. We conclude this chapter with observations on proposed future directions for medical education innovation and accreditation strategies to better prepare doctors to navigate anticipated change and disruption to their ways of being and competence.
