| Description | In this chapter, we analyze the temperature dependence of the surface energy of a nematic liquid crystal sample in three different perspectives. We start by discussing a model for the thermal renormalization of the anchoring energy, by expanding the surface energy in series of spherical harmonic functions. The coefficients of the expansion are the experimentally detectable anchoring coefficients. It is shown that all the anchoring coefficients of the same order depend on the temperature in the same manner. As a consequence, the alignment transitions driven by the surface (the so-called temperature surface transitions) are due to a surface anchoring energy which contains contributions of different orders. A local self-consistent model, that takes into account the presence of a surface field as well as an incomplete bulk nematic interaction, is presented in connection with the determination of the temperature dependence of the surface tension near the nematic-isotropic phase transition. It is shown that, according to the strength of the surface field, the surface tension presents a minimum just before the transition, followed by a strong variation at the transition. Finally, a microscopic approach to the surface gliding effect in lyotropic liquid crystals is discussed in terms of a thermally activated process. The problem is formulated in terms of a master equation describing the jumps between adjacent angular positions. Book Name: Adsorption Phenomena and Anchoring Energy in Nematic Liquid Crystals |
