| Description | Investors, such as private households, trustees and financial institutions, often delegate the management of their wealth to fund managers. Delegation can take place in different ways. Investors could buy units of existing investment products offered by fund managers. Such collective investment schemes pool monies of many investors and the manager will be in the position to hold a well-diversified portfolio. The manager will also be able to trade under wholesale conditions and use cost-effective record keeping. It will be possible to invest in assets with high unit values, such as commercial buildings. Most individual investors do not have enough wealth to be able to exploit such economies of scope and scale efficiently. Even if financial institutions, such as pension funds and insurance companies, could exploit such economies, it might still be better to rely on the expertise of an external manager. However, investors with sufficient capital are not constrained to invest in products that are already on offer. They could also instruct managers to provide tailored investment products that suit their specific needs and objectives. It is also possible that a manager would invite a selected group of such investors as limited partners into a newly created closed-ended investment scheme.
