| Description | Diurnal changes in mitotic index of various regions within the apex were measured in plants of Trifolium repens L. grown in controlled conditions. The data suggest a complex light and temperature interaction on mitotic index. In all conditions tested, mitotic index reached a maximum during the day, the peak being more marked in fluctuating than in constant temperature. In constant temperature with eight hours light there was a second peak about midnight. No correlation was found between time of day and plastochron stage of apex, size of apex, or cell number in apex, or between time of day and size or cell number of the various apical regions. |
