| Description | In physics, the term cluster denotes a group of atoms or molecules. Large clusters with stable structures are very interesting systems both by themselves and as building blocks for nanostructures, i.e., objects of nanometer (1 nm = 10−9 m) sizes, intermediate between molecular and microscopic (micrometersized, 1 μm = 10−6 m) structures. In particular, the discovery of buckminsterfullerene (Kroto et al. 1985) and carbon nanotubes (Iijima 1991), sketched in Figure 50.1, opened a completely new eld of research: nanotechnology. Nanotechnology, which deals with structures of typical sizes of 100 nm or smaller, involves the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale, and the development of materials or devices that lead to many applications, such as in medicine, electronics, and energy production.
