| Description | The dried rhizomes of Paris polyphylla Smith var. yunnanensis (Franch.) Hand.-Mazz. (PPY, family Melanthiaceae), which are well-recognized as “Dian Chonglou” in Chinese and recorded as one of the original plants of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Paridis Rhizoma in the Chinese Pharmacopeia (from 1977 to 2020 editions), have been widely used in TCM as indispensable ingredients in over 100 patent medicines. PPY is mainly distributed in Southwest China and has been cultivated on a large scale in Yunnan Province for its important medicinal properties. The rhizomes have been traditionally used to treat traumatic injuries, abscesses, mastitis, chronic bronchitis, and hepatopathy. This chapter presents a systematic and comprehensive overview of the ethnopharmacological usages of PPY, its traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, and pharmacological activities, including quality control, pharmacokinetics, and toxicological studies of PPY.
