| Description | Althusser attempted to negotiate a politically revolutionary position between the rock of a Stalinist French Communist Party whose authoritarian, bureaucratic leadership he detested, and the hard place of a Structuralist theoretical tradition whose pessimistic determinism and philosophical relativism undermined his hope for equalitarian, anticapitalist revolution. Both the rock and the hard place have now disappeared, but perhaps it may be of some future value to footnote their role as vanishing mediators in the transition to global capitalist hegemony. Easily the most overlooked aspect of the local context shaping Althusser's theoretical development is the crisis of Structuralism initiated by Derrida. Althusser responded to the intellectual crisis of Structuralism by abandoning the notion of Marxist philosophy as the arbiter of science and by redefining it as a battleground, the site of a continuous struggle between science and ideology whose ultimate stake is the category of science itself.
