| Description | Between 1909 and late 1912 Lady Stout, a well-known New Zealand activist, put herself at the disposal of the British women's suffrage campaign. Born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1858 to Scottish immigrant parents, Anna identified herself as a native New Zealander and a loyal woman of the Empire. Building on her many years of experience at the centre of New Zealand political and cultural life, she was uniquely positioned as an enfranchised and influential woman to assist the British suffrage campaign. This chapter considers in particular her close association with the Pankhurst and the WSPU leadership, her work on behalf of the WSPU as well as her deliberate promotion of New Zealand as an exemplar of social progress within the Empire. Anna Stout had a clear understanding of the importance of public image in the campaign for suffrage. In this regard, discussion is offered about her role in establishing the Australian and New Zealand Women Voter's Association, her use of media to further the suffragettes' public image in the colonial press and the nature of her continuing defense of the WSPU to the New Zealand public upon her return home. This chapter offers the first significant research into the life of one of colonial New Zealand's most prominent, enfranchised and political women and her work to promote women's suffrage within the British world.
